August wrap-up // The last month of summer is always the most bittersweet

Dammit, I had a brilliant way to start this wrap-up, it involved a Taylor Swift august reference, and I totally forgot it. I knew I should’ve written it down when my Muse stroke me. Never mind, it’ll probably come to my mind in the middle of winter. August was great, I had the chance to travel inside my country, been to two places I’d never visited before, and also returned to my favourite, the cottage. I wish I could’ve stayed there longer, but work waits for no one. I read five books, I finished a series I started in that month, which is so rare.

Read books
  • You Have a Match (Emma Lord) ⭐⭐.5 ➽ I hate friends-to-lovers trope, and the number of times they obsessed over Instagram… no, this was not the camp setting I was looking forward to
  • An Absolutely Remarkable Thing (Hank Green) ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 ➽ I was so surprised by how much I loved this!!! such good conversations, thought-provoking, utterly intelligent YA book
  • A Beautifully Foolish Endeavour (Hank Green) ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 ➽ the sequel was just as great, I really enjoyed reading these books
  • Untamed (Glennon Doyle) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ➽ empowering, other times a bit obnoxious, but overall a good book
  • Apology of Socrates & The Symposium (Plato) ⭐⭐⭐⭐The Symposium was super interesting, the other was a tad boring

Autumn Equinox tbr:

  • Lovely War (Julie Berry) ❌
  • The Prophet (Kahlil Gibran) ❌
  • A Thousand Ships (Natalie Haynes) ❌
  • Mythos (Stephen Fry) currently reading
  • The Travelling Cat’s Chronicles (Hiro Arikawa) ❌
  • The Memory Police (Yoko Ogawa) ❌
  • The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas (Machado de Assis) currently reading
  • Apology of Socrates & The Symposium (Plato) ✅

I managed to finish one book, and I’ve started two others, which I’ve yet to finish. I decided to extend this read-a-thon to September because I want to read what I’ve picked, there just wasn’t enough time for me (but I found time to watch a great number of TV shows and movies 😅).

What I watched

  • Love, Victor (S1-3) ➽ I binged this in a few days, so addictive and fun
  • folklore: the long pond studio sessions ➽ it’s Taylor Swift, I loved it so much, this actually made me inspired to start writing a story from Augustine’s perspective (the girl in the song august)
  • Mamma Mia! 🔄 ➽ I’ve probably seen this five times already, I could watch it any time, so good and funny
  • A Whisker Away ➽ I didn’t really enjoy this one, it was good but not that good
  • Thirty-Nine ➽ I finally finished this k-drama, it was super long, and when I started I didn’t realise it was going to be this sad
  • Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea ➽ my least favourite Studio Ghibli, it was bad
  • Never Have I Ever (S3) ➽ loved it, though I definitely grew out of these shows
  • The Wind Rises ➽ I don’t care about aeroplanes, so it really bored me
  • Mean Girls 🔄 ➽ my second time watching it, so entertaining
  • Clueless 🔄 ➽ I love this so much!!
  • Notting Hill ➽ ahh, these 90s romantic movies just hit differently
  • Hannah Montana: The Movie ➽ I was obsessed with Hannah Montana when I was in elementary school, but I actually never saw the movie before, it was cute
  • The Last Song ➽ oh my God, I didn’t know before going in, that this was a sad story!!! I bawled my eyes out, but it was so amazing
  • The Parent Trap ➽ yeah, I got Disney+ 😂 such a fun and adorable little movie
  • Far from the Madding Crowd ➽ it was good, but I found the romances unrealistic and boring
  • Hamilton ➽ I don’t like plays that don’t have talking, I find them hard to connect to, but the songs are so amazing

What I listened to

  • ABBA songs ➽ after watching Mamma Mia!, I created a playlist with all songs from both of the movies (of course the ABBA versions), my absolute favourites are Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) and The Winner Takes It All
  • The Beatles songs ➽ I randomly felt the need to listen to The Beatles, which I haven’t felt in a while (I was a huge fan in high school), my two favourites are In My Life and I Want To Hold Your Hand
  • Demi Lovato: HOLY FVCK ➽ I fvcking love this album, I can’t even express how happy I am that they are back to her old rock style!! it’s extremely hard to choose favourites, but here we go: HAPPY ENDING makes me wanna cry, 4 EVER 4 ME makes me so happy, and WASTED is just pure gold
  • Hamilton soundtrack ➽ the actors have amazing voices, my favourite songs are It’s Quiet Uptown (it’s so moving), You’ll Be Back (George III is iconic, I laugh so hard at his parts) and Satisfied (Angelica’s rap is everything)
  • Books Unbound podcast ➽ episode 39-49: I randomly remembered that I listened to quite a good amount of this podcast back when it started, and then I kind of forgot about it, but now it’s my favourite
August bakings
  • peanut butter oatmeal chocolate chip cookies: so quick and yummy
  • tagalongs: this was so delicious, but I would make two batches the next time
  • peach-sour cherry crumbler: super easy, I’ve never made it before August, but I’ll definitely make some again, plus they are perfect with ice cream
August travels

I went to Lake Velence for just a day trip with a friend, and it was great fun. We stumbled upon a bird-ringing, and they allowed me to set free a swallow, which is my favourite bird. Then, toward the end of the month, I travelled to the cottage, where I stayed for one and a half weeks. The weather was rainy and windy at the beginning, but I didn’t care as one of my friends whom I haven’t seen since last summer was there, and we chatted and played a lot of games. She wasn’t there for a lot of time, but I wasn’t alone for long as another friend of mine visited me for two days. We went to a city at Lake Balaton, just because there’s an ice cream parlour that has won awards. 😂 Yeah, we’re dedicated like that. It was definitely worth it, the ice creams were incredibly tasty. We both tried four flavours, as you could ask for smaller portions. I had pistachio, baked blueberry-goat cheese (they won an award with this last year), Őrség aranya (which is my favourite Cake of Hungary) and Boldogasszony papucsa (which is also a Cake of Hungary). They were the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted! After that, we walked a bit, and saw the lake from a hill, which was beautiful. We parted ways, he went home, and me back to the cottage. I stayed for a few more days alone, and it was fantastic. I had a mobile phone-free day on Saturday, which was much needed. I swam and walked a lot, it was a great time. The end of August is always hard for me, as it means I won’t be able to return to the cottage for a long time. I’m so grateful that I have this ability to use it during the summer, I love staying in a peaceful town close to nature. Returning to the city was hard, and I’m still longing for clean air and peace.

How was your August? I hope the last month of summer (or winter if you’re living in the Southern Hemisphere) went well for you. Have you read anything good? Do you enjoy musicals? Can you recommend to me some that are like Wicked, so it involves talking next to singing?

  1. I’m glad you had a good August! Mine just seemed to disappear 🙈 I’m glad you enjoyed Hamilton – the songs really are so good! I’m afraid i don’t really watch musicals myself either, so you’ve already watched any I’ve seen 😂

  2. I really want to read the memory police given that everyone who’s read it are absolutely obsessed with it. The parent trap is such a fun film!! I watched it many years ago but i remember it being hilarious. I still can’t believe I haven’t watched clueless and mean girls, both are such famous movies!
Hope you have a great month ahead 💛💛

  3. I also really didn’t like You Have a Match!! I thought it was just me, but friends to lovers can go really wrong for me and this book proved that 😅 On the bright side, I loved the author’s When You Get the Chance a lot more!

Peanut butter oatmeal chocolate chip cookies sound so delicious!! I need to bake some more now that fall is coming 🍪 I’m also glad to hear that you could relax and travel a bit! Wishing you a good September ❤️

    1. You’re so not alone in that! 🤣 I just wish they stayed friends, that other guy could have been such a great love interest (the one who climbed that wish tree or something, I totally forgot his name). I’m glad you enjoyed that other novel of this author!

Thank you, Caro! 💜 I hope you have a wonderful September as well, and I wish you lots of yummy cookies! 😂
